STOP! Don’t Throw These Thanksgiving Foods Down the Disposal

Person holding a turkey in a pan, surrounded by other Thanksgiving foods.

Are you ready for the big annual thanksgiving feast? Whether you’re cooking turkey, ham, or no meat at all, there are many different foods that should not be put down your disposal.

Grease

Grease or any other cooking oils should never be put down your disposal or drain. Oils, grease, and fats have the ability to clog drains. They can accumulate over time and jam your disposal. Instead, pour grease and oils into the trash directly.

Turkey Bones

The bird may be a signature thanksgiving meal, but the bones of it can be highly dangerous to your plumbing systems. Turkey bones are too hard for the garbage disposal to grind and will lead to severe blade damage. Throw them in the trash to avoid any plumbing problems or injury.

Pumpkin Seeds

If you’re cooking pumpkin seeds or pumpkin pulp, be sure to leave them out of the disposal. They can cause nasty clogs once the pulp hardens and the seeds can jam the blades.

Eggshells

Cooking anything with eggs? Leave those shells out of the sink at all times. Even if the shells accidentally get washed down the disposal or drain, they can do damage. When ground up, they can turn into a sand-like substance that can stick to the pipes and cause clogs over time.

Coffee

Coffee for breakfast for out of town guests? What a great way to start the morning. Coffee grounds should be tossed in the trash. The finely ground substance will get stuck in your drain trap and create clogs.
